Italian Early Renaissance Painter, 1445-1510 Italian painter and draughtsman. In his lifetime he was one of the most esteemed painters in Italy, enjoying the patronage of the leading families of Florence, in particular the Medici and their banking clients. He was summoned to take part in the decoration of the Sistine Chapel in Rome, was highly commended by diplomatic agents to Ludovico Sforza in Milan and Isabella d Este in Mantua and also received enthusiastic praise from the famous mathematician Luca Pacioli and the humanist poet Ugolino Verino. By the time of his death, however, Botticelli s reputation was already waning. He was overshadowed first by the advent of what Vasari called the maniera devota, a new style by Perugino, Francesco Francia and the young Raphael, whose new and humanly affective sentiment, infused atmospheric effects and sweet colourism took Italy by storm; he was then eclipsed with the establishment immediately afterwards of the High Renaissance style, which Vasari called the modern manner, in the paintings of Michelangelo and the mature works of Raphael in the Vatican. Fernand cormon
French Academic Painter, 1845-1924 French painter. He studied initially in Brussels under Jean-Fran?ois Portaels. In 1863 he returned to Paris, where for three years he was a pupil of Alexandre Cabanel and Eug?ne Fromentin. He made his d?but at the Salon in 1868 and in 1870 received a medal for the Marriage of the Niebelungen (1870; ex-Mus. B.-A., Lisieux, 1970). His painting the Death of King Ravana (1875; Toulouse, Mus. Augustins), taken from the Indian epic poem the Ramayana, was criticized for the choice of an obscure subject but was nevertheless awarded the Prix de Salon in 1875. Soon afterwards Cormon left France for Tunisia. After his return in 1877 he exhibited regularly at the Salon until his death, establishing a reputation as a painter of historical and religious subjects; he also produced some portraits.
Frits Van den Berghe
(3 April 1883 - 22 September 1939) was a Belgian expressionist painter. He was born at Ghent. Like his friends Constant Permeke and Gustave De Smet, he first adopted the late-impressionist style of Emile Claus, but converted to expressionism during World War I.
Alexandre Defaux
(1826-1900) was a French artist. He was born in Bercy and studied under Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot. He was a member of the Barbizon School.
